Regional Focus | Home Art Design with Ochre

Guest post from Holly Cardew, founder of online market place Country & Co. Holly will post each month about her passion for creative businesses and people.

If you haven’t noticed already, Orange (NSW) is one of my favourite towns. I love everything about it – the people, the coffee, and the shopping. This month, I spoke to Gemma Crow, the owner of Orange store Ochre, about her business.

GL: How long have you had Ochre for? What made you decide to start your own business?

Gemma: I opened the doors to Ochre in September 2011. The desire to start my own business stemmed from my creative background in Fine Arts and my love of design. When my partner and I moved to Orange in early 2011 it seemed like the right place and the right time to begin such a venture.

GL: What is your background, what did you do before starting a homewares store?

Gemma: I have a background in fine arts, design and teaching. Before opening Ochre I spent time working in the NT in a printmaking studio and gallery. This was a wonderful experience that gave me the knowledge and love of Indigenous art that inspired me to introduce it into my store. After the NT I studied teaching and spent the years following teaching across the NT, Kimberley and the Central West. It was the move to the Central West that gave me the opportunity to return to my creative routes and develop my business.

GL: Can you tell us about your favourite colour palette and why?

Gemma: I’m all about neutrals and earthy tones. When I decorate a space I start with a neutral wall colour like taupe or white and build from there. I am drawn to natural colours, textures and fabrics like linen. I like to introduce my colour through accessories, and artwork. My accent colours of choice are those that represent warmth – ochres, natural woods like oak and various tones of orange.

GL: What's on your bedside table?

Gemma: A leather journal for those ideas that come to me in the middle of the night or early in the morning. A bedside lamp, a second hand find I found on one of my foraging trips. A gorgeous Huon Pine bowl that I bought on my trip to Tassie late last year. And a collection of  Home Beautiful and Inside Out magazines

GL: What is on your wish current list?

Gemma: Top of my wish list at the moment is a beautiful circular oak mirror by NZ designers ‘Douglas and Bec’.

Ochre is a bricks & mortar store in Orange (NSW) and also has a fab online store, which you can view here.
