Design Business | Ellie Bradley

Janet and I are really passionate about working with creative people. Recently we have been wanting to talk to other mothers in the design industry, those who have turned their passion into a business while trying to juggle family life.

Today we talk to the ever creative Ellie Bradley from Xavier & Me.

GL: What made you start your own business?

XM: I’ve always been interested in design and interiors. It was during my 15 years working in advertising that my interests grew, and prompted me to launch Xavier & Me. I worked with some of Australia’s best design agencies, photographers and stylists so the idea just grew. I used to sketch ideas and designs when I travelled so after many sketch books, I started to explore these designs on textiles. I wouldn’t call it brave, but rather something I was supposed to do. Its my passion, so it nice to be doing that every day.

GL: What has been the hardest part of launching Xavier & Me?

XM: The hardest thing was adjusting to working at home. There are so many things that can distract you but also you can end up working 7 days a week. I still need to tell myself to get out and go for a walk, or ensure I close my computer on a Sunday morning. You never actually leave work when you work from home so its ensuring that I give time to family, and also taking some time out.

GL: What is the most rewarding part of running your own business?

XM: I do love it when I get comments back from customers saying how they love the cushions. Its always nice to know that what you are designing resonates with people. I also love working with interior designers as this gives me the opportunity to work side by side someone to create a wonderful home or room for their client.

GL: How do you manage the business while fitting in family and kids?

XM: The work/life balance is something everyone is striving for. I’m not sure I have it right yet, but I’m lucky to have flexibility with my time and when I work, which makes it easier to work around family commitments.

GL: Where do you see yourself going? Where would you like to be in 5 years?

XM: Wow 5 years. Seems so long away! But for Xavier & Me I hope to have built up my product offering and maybe have moved out of my home and into an office. I have just started another company which is in the beginning stages with a friend so hopefully both will be doing very well. This would give me the opportunity to do the other thing I love, travel with my family and show my son the world.

The entire Xavier & Me is on sale on Gallop Lifestyle for this week only. 20% off all cushion and place mat designs. Click here to shop online.
